Extremism, Terrorism and the Internet: Theologians Held a Preventive Discussion with Students

Extremism and terrorism have become among the most dangerous problems of our time and pose a real threat to national security. It is therefore vital to strengthen young people’s resistance to the propaganda of religious and political extremist organisations and encourage their social engagement.
The Peoples’ Friendship University named after Academician А.Куатбекова is working actively in this area with Shymkent’s Department of Religious Affairs. A meeting was held at the university for year 1 students.
The invited speakers were: Head of the Public Harmony Division of Shymkent’s Department of Internal Policy and Youth Affairs Abdikarim Nurzhan Kenesuly, Head of the Organisation and Coordination of Outreach Work Division Tillabek Sayan Adnabekuly, and also attending were Vice-Rector for Educational and Social Work at the Peoples’ Friendship University named after Academician А.Куатбекова, Садыков Бердыкул Кадыркулович, and university students.
Students showed a keen interest in reliable sources of information and safe behaviour on social networks. The main advice was to trust only official sources, which are also available on the internet; avoid people who persistently steer conversations towards religion; and remember that extremist ideology eventually suppresses the individual and undermines a fulfilling life. Students received comprehensive answers to their questions.
